Hey Fiona,
This was interesting. Any chance of an article on tax considerations for freelance journalists? Does one need to charge VAT, etc?
Thanks.

Just discovered this website. I'm on a career break from a reporting job after arrival of baby#3 so I'm interested in starting some freelance journalism work from home.
Any chance of some information on negotiating prices for freelance work and on how to handle tax, for example, must one charge clients VAT?

Hi Katy, great post! There's some good advice there. I agree that it's really important to ask your client to refer you straight away while you are fresh in their mind. They will be grateful for the good work you have done and they won't mind doing it. If you leave it too long their gratitude will have faded and they may not be as forthcoming or as enthusiastic about doing something for you.

Joanna,
I took the plunge to give up a secure job when I qualified in Journalism, I dont regret my decision. I now have the opportunity to - use my self disipline each day, thus - enjoying freedom, meeting ordinary people with extraordinary stories.
My managerial skills are continually tested on - self marketing, and housekeeping budgeting on a flexi income.
But I manage well. in fact the whole process and experience has produced my first book, 'Stepping Out' .
My book presently at Publishers, will be in shops mid Summer.
Continued Success to you.

Hi Issa, thanks for the comment!
It really depends on who/where your target market are, I suppose. It's definitely better for your business to do both rather than to choose one. I think everyone should be using the internet in some way in running their business these days!
